Choose Google Cybersecurity when you need a structured beginner learning program. Choose Security+ when you have the foundation to prepare for an exam and target jobs specifically request that credential. They serve different purposes, and completing the Google program does not automatically earn Security+.

Google’s price, study estimate and beginner access are stated on its official Coursera program page. Security+ details and price come from CompTIA’s current V7 page. At $49 per paid month, three months costs $147 and six costs $294, before tax or a different enrollment offer.
Check the Security+ version before buying preparation
As of October 9, 2026, CompTIA lists V7 as available and expects V8 to launch on or around November 17, 2026. The English V7 exam is listed to retire June 11, 2027. Confirm the current Security+ version schedule and choose materials that match the exam you intend to take; future dates can change.
Who should start with Google Cybersecurity?
A guided program can help when terms such as permissions, logs and network traffic are unfamiliar. Your goal should be to explain and apply the material, not to finish videos as quickly as possible.
Alongside coursework, keep a portfolio of original practice: a sample incident summary using fictional data, a Linux permissions exercise and a short query or script with an explanation. State the scenario, the evidence, your interpretation and the limits of the result. Use systems and lab data you are authorized to access.

Who should prioritize Security+?
Prioritize the exam when the positions you can realistically apply for name Security+ and you can already explain basic operating systems and networking. Read required and preferred qualifications separately. A listed certification does not cancel an employer’s other requirements.
CompTIA recommends Network+ and two years of security or systems-administration experience for V7. That recommendation is a signal about the assumed foundation. If basic troubleshooting is a gap, read A+ vs Network+ and the beginner IT roadmap before spending on advanced preparation.
Can you take Security+ without job experience?
Having no security job yet does not make guided study pointless. It does mean you should assess what you can actually do before paying for an exam. Can you explain DNS, distinguish authentication from authorization, interpret a simple log and investigate a routine connectivity problem? Build those skills through study and authorized labs, then reassess readiness.
Should you complete both?
Both can make sense when you need a learning sequence now and an employer-requested exam later. They are less useful if they cover material you already know or consume the budget you need for practice and applications. Complete one clear step before buying the next.
- Start with Google if you need guided fundamentals.
- Compare what you learned with the Security+ objectives for your chosen exam version.
- Fill the gaps, practise applied scenarios and use fresh timed questions.
- Pay for the exam when readiness and job relevance justify the cost.
Budget beyond the first payment
For Security+ renewed through uploaded CEUs, CompTIA lists a $150 CE fee over a three-year period. Other renewal routes have different costs and may waive that fee. Check official renewal details. For Google, verify the enrollment offer, subscription and cancellation terms at checkout and plan enough study time to avoid idle paid months.
Make the decision
Need a learning program: consider Google. Need a named exam credential and have the foundation: consider Security+. Need a first IT direction: return to Best First IT Certification or the cybersecurity guides. Neither path guarantees employment; practical evidence and a focused job search still matter.
